Mustasim Rumi, M.D.
Dr. Mustasim Rumi is an orthopaedic surgeon with fellowship training in spine surgery who takes special interest in disorders of the cervical spine. Understanding that patients need to take an active role in their treatment and recovery to achieve the best results, the spine center at Orthopaedic Associates of Central Texas strives to establish the ideal balance of non-operative and operative treatment options on an individual basis for their patients. Dr. Rumi treats a variety of spinal disorders including disc herniations, nerve root impingement, spinal cord compression, spinal stenosis, sciatica, radiculopathy and myelopathy, vertebral compression fractures, spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis, degenerative conditions of all areas of the spine, sports related neck and back injuries, and spinal fractures.
Dr. Rumi was raised in Rochester, NY and spent most of his life in the northeast. He received his BA from Colgate University (Hamilton, NY) in 1991 and graduated from medical school at the University of Rochester, School of Medicine (Rochester, NY) in 1995 where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His internship and residency in surgery and orthopaedic surgery were done at Tufts University School of Medicine-New England Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts and at The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center of the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine in Hershey, PA. During his orthopaedic surgery residency Dr. Rumi elected to spend an additional year of his training dedicated to musculoskeletal research. He has won several awards, published scientific papers and textbook chapters, and presented much of his research at national meetings.
Following his residency training Dr. Rumi elected to pursue advanced training in spine surgery at the Emory Spine Center of Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Subsequently he served on the medical staff of Tufts University School of Medicine – New England Medical Center in Boston, MA where he practiced as a spine surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedics. He left New England to join Orthopaedic Associates of Central Texas in October 2005. In addition to developing the spine center at our practice Dr. Rumi also serves as Medical Director of the spine institute at RoundRock Medical Center. He is a member of the North American Spine Society, a candidate member of the AmericanAcademy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Texas Medical Association.
Dr. Rumi comes to Round Rock with his wife, Zarmeena Vendal, MD, and their young son. Dr. Vendal, an alumnus of UT-Austin and then UT-San Antonio medical school, is a fellowship trained eye surgeon from Harvard University and also plans to practice in Williamson County. Their hobbies include traveling, recreational sports, dining out, and spending time with their family.
